Five Smoke Alarm Maintenance Tips To Keep Your Family Safe

Tip #1 – Change the battery yearly

While you may not believe it is always necessary to switch out your battery, it is better to be safe than sorry. It is a good idea to pick a specific day of the year that you change the battery. This could be the start of the New Year, April 1st, or in April or October when changing the time for daylight savings.

Tip #2 – Test and dust

We like to bunch these two together so it is one single test. You want to test your smoke alarm every month and gently brush it to ensure that there is no dust clogging your alarm. Dust could prevent your alarm from functioning as it should.

Tip #3 – The annoying kitchen alarm

Do you find that you have to turn off your smoke alarm more often than you like because the alarm in your kitchen is going off?

Instead of removing the batteries altogether, it is a good idea to re-position your smoke alarm away from your cooking appliances. You want to make sure that the smoke alarm is at least 10 feet from any cooking appliances. You may be able to find smoke alarms designed specifically for the cooking area as well.

If you are in the process of replacing your alarms then also consider using a photoelectric smoke alarm near your kitchen. (You can find our more about the difference between photoelectric and ionisation alarms here:The Difference Between Photoelectric and Ionisation Smoke Alarms).

Tip #4 – A complete overhaul

Because a smoke alarm is not essential until that moment that it is, most homeowners tend to forget about their smoke alarm. The truth is that after 10 years or so, it is highly recommended that you buy an entirely new smoke alarm instead of simply replacing the battery.

Tip #5 – Pay attention to the physical

You want to make sure that you do not paint over or otherwise cover your smoke alarm as this could prevent it from working properly.

It is also a good idea to pay attention to see if the unit is covered with dirt accumulations, heavy grease, or smoke stains. Something to be especially aware of it your unit is near the kitchen.
